A large sinkhole opened without warning at a busy intersection in Omaha, pulling two vehicles into the collapse while they were stopped at a red light.
Police said both drivers managed to get out of their cars before emergency responders reached the scene. No injuries were reported. Authorities quickly secured the area and diverted traffic as crews began assessing the damage.
Officials in Nebraska warned that the affected roadway could remain closed for several days. Engineers are working to stabilise the ground and evaluate the risk of further collapse. There are concerns that the sinkhole could widen if the surrounding soil is not reinforced.
Emergency teams cordoned off the intersection to prevent additional vehicles or pedestrians from approaching the unstable section of road. Heavy equipment has been brought in to examine the extent of the underground damage and determine what repairs are required.
Drivers have been advised to follow detours and expect delays while the site remains under investigation. Authorities said updates will be provided as work continues to secure and repair the intersection.
