Chilean President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of catastrophe in the Ñuble and Biobío regions following deadly wildfires that have claimed at least 18 lives. The devastating fires, which have swept through dry forests near the coastal city of Concepción, have forced the evacuation of more than 50,000 people. With 250 homes destroyed, the fires have ravaged over 8,500 hectares of land in these two regions.
The fires are exacerbated by strong winds and high summer temperatures, which have made firefighting efforts challenging. Boric has warned that the death toll is expected to rise, as disaster officials continue to battle the flames. In response to the escalating crisis, Boric has mobilized Chile’s armed forces to assist in firefighting efforts and manage evacuations.

The worst-hit areas include the cities of Penco and Lirquen, where more than 60,000 residents live. As of now, Chile is under heat alerts, with temperatures expected to soar to 38°C between Santiago and Biobío in the coming days. This marks the latest in a series of deadly wildfires that have plagued Chile, worsened by long-term drought conditions.
