The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) will not pursue an investigation into the shooting death of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother from Minneapolis, at the hands of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer earlier this month. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that the DOJโs civil rights unit does not intend to investigate the incident, explaining that investigations are only carried out when deemed appropriate. He clarified that officers acting in self-defense, as claimed by the ICE agent involved, are not automatically subjected to investigation.
Good was shot on January 7, 2026, by ICE officer Jonathan Ross while participating in a protest in Minneapolis. The shooting, recorded by witnesses on their phones, has raised questions about the response time after the incident. Reports by Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) and APM Reports indicated that Good was left bleeding in her car for nearly three minutes before receiving medical attention, despite a physician offering to help.
Goodโs family has initiated their own civil investigation into her death, as they seek to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. Local and national protests have continued in response to the incident, with residents demanding answers from authorities.
