US President Donald Trump has said his relationship with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has deteriorated following disagreements over the Iran conflict and remarks related to the Pope.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Trump said ties with Meloni are “no longer the same” and described the relationship as having turned negative. He criticised Italy’s position during the ongoing Iran situation, stating that countries which did not support the United States should expect changes in bilateral relations.
“I thought she had courage, I was wrong,” Trump said, adding that cooperation had declined after Italy declined to assist Washington in the conflict.
Trump also referred to Italy’s reliance on energy routes linked to the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that geopolitical considerations could affect future relations.
Meloni has stated that Italy will not participate in the conflict. Italian authorities had earlier declined to allow US bombers to use a key air base in Sicily. She also criticised Trump’s remarks about the Pope, calling them unacceptable and expressing support for Pope Francis.
Italian officials sought to downplay the impact of the dispute. Cabinet minister Adolfo Urso said relations between Italy and the United States remain stable within existing alliances, including NATO.
The exchange highlights differences between the two governments over the Iran conflict and broader diplomatic conduct, though both sides continue to remain part of long-standing international partnerships.
