Renee Macklin Good, 37, was remembered by family and friends as a poet, mother of three, and a compassionate presence in her community. Her wife, Becca Good, described her as โmade of sunshine,โ with a deep belief in treating everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of background.
Good, originally from Colorado Springs, graduated from Old Dominion University with a degree in English and won a poetry prize in 2020. Former classmates and professors recall her warmth, generosity, and ability to uplift others, even while pregnant and balancing family responsibilities during the early pandemic.
She and her family recently moved to Minneapolis seeking a safe and welcoming community. Videos of the January 7 incident show federal agents approaching her car during an ICE operation. Footage shows one agent pointing a gun and firing through the windshield as Good attempted to drive away. Eyewitness accounts do not support federal claims that she tried to harm officers.
Her death has sparked protests and vigils in Minneapolis, where residents honored her memory with candles, flowers, and tributes. Friends and family described her as loving, forgiving, and devoted to her children. Becca Good said the sense of safety and hope she found in Minneapolis has been taken away.
