Vince Zampella, one of the creators of the globally successful Call of Duty video game series, has died in a car crash in California at the age of 55. His death was confirmed by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, the studio he co-founded.
The crash occurred on a highway in Los Angeles on Sunday. Zampella was travelling in a Ferrari with another person when the vehicle veered off the road, struck a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Authorities said the passenger was ejected from the car, while the driver remained trapped. Both occupants died at the scene. Officials have not confirmed whether Zampella was driving or identified the second person. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Zampella co-created Call of Duty in 2003 alongside long-time collaborators. The franchise, inspired partly by World War II, has sold over 500 million copies worldwide and has become one of the most successful video game series ever. It has also led to plans for a live-action film.
Beyond Call of Duty, Zampella played a major role in developing other popular titles, including Medal of Honor, Titanfall, and Apex Legends. Industry figures and gaming companies described him as a visionary who deeply valued player experience.
His contributions have left a lasting impact on the global gaming industry.
