A massive avalanche struck the Castle Peak area in Northern California on Tuesday during a powerful winter storm, leaving eight skiers dead, six rescued alive, and at least ten still missing, according to officials and reports from BBC.
Rescue teams working in the Lake Tahoe backcountry recovered the bodies of eight skiers buried under the “football-field” sized avalanche, authorities confirmed Wednesday. Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon reported that a ninth skier remains missing but is presumed dead.
The tragedy struck a personal chord for the community, as one of the victims was the spouse of a search-and-rescue team member.
The avalanche hit around 11:30 a.m. PST, initially leaving 15 skiers unaccounted for. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities continue to comb the treacherous terrain northwest of Lake Tahoe, assessing the full impact of the slide.
