US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

US President Donald Trump has linked trade tariffs on India directly to New Delhiโ€™s purchase of Russian oil, while publicly reflecting on his personal relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at a political gathering, Trump said India had ordered 68 Apache helicopters and noted that PM Modi had visited him, describing their relationship as generally positive but strained over trade issues.

Trump stated that India was paying high tariffs and claimed this had caused friction between the two leaders. He alleged that India later reduced tariffs in an effort to address his concerns, portraying the move as an attempt to improve relations. According to Trump, the tariffs, which total 50 percent, were imposed because of Indiaโ€™s continued purchase of Russian oil amid the Russia-Ukraine war.

He warned that the tariffs could be increased further if India did not cooperate on what he called the Russian oil issue. Trump accused India of indirectly strengthening Russia by buying discounted crude and argued that trade pressure was necessary to protect US interests. India has previously denied Trumpโ€™s assertion that PM Modi assured him oil purchases would stop.

Defending his trade policy, Trump claimed tariffs had generated significant revenue for the United States, saying they were both a financial tool and a means to influence foreign government decisions.
