A United States military operation in Venezuela that led to the capture and removal of President Nicolรกs Maduro resulted in the deaths of at least 55 Venezuelan and Cuban military and security personnel, officials in Caracas and Havana reported on Tuesday. Venezuelaโ€™s armed forces confirmed that 23 of their service members were killed during the attacks, while Cuba said 32 members of its armed forces and interior ministry security personnel deployed in Caracas died in the operation.

The casualties included personnel of various ranks, and many of the Cuban troops were believed to be part of Maduroโ€™s security detail, according to Venezuelaโ€™s Defence Minister. The raid began with bombing of military targets and ended with special forces landing by helicopter to seize Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from a compound. Both leaders were later flown to New York, where they appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and related charges.

Following the court appearance, Maduroโ€™s former deputy Delcy Rodrรญguez was sworn in as interim president, marking the start of a transition phase in Venezuelaโ€™s leadership. Rodrรญguez now faces pressure to balance US demands, including access for US energy companies, with maintaining support from elements of the former governmentโ€™s security establishment.
