A fatal shooting by a US immigration agent in Minneapolis has triggered sharp disagreement between local authorities and the Trump administration over what led to the death of a 37-year-old woman. The Department of Homeland Security said Renee Nicole Good was a violent rioter who attempted to run over Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, calling the shooting an act of self-defence.
Local leaders strongly rejected that account. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said the incident involved reckless use of authority and demanded that ICE agents leave the city. Minneapolis police said the woman was sitting in her vehicle, blocking a residential street, when she was approached by a federal agent on foot and began to drive away.
Videos shared on social media show a maroon SUV stopped in the street, surrounded by protesters and law enforcement vehicles. As agents approached the vehicle and attempted to open the driverโs door, shots were fired when the SUV tried to move. The vehicle then lost control and crashed into a parked car.
President Donald Trump said an ICE officer had been viciously run over and blamed what he called the radical left for targeting law enforcement. The incident comes as hundreds of ICE agents have been deployed to Minneapolis as part of a wider immigration crackdown, further intensifying tensions in the city.
